REI Supports the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

Sep 7, 2021

The principle that each person is guaranteed a vote is foundational to both our co-op and our democracy. REI remains committed to broadening civic engagement as we work to create a more equitable co-op and society.

In April, we condemned a wave of voter suppression legislation. Today, we're affirming our support of a bill that would help protect everyone's right to participate in the democratic process.

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would restore the Attorney General's authority to prevent discrimination at the polls, increase access to voting within disadvantaged communities (particularly for Native American and Alaska Native voters), and create greater transparency by requiring public notice around changes in the voting process.

We urge the U.S. Senate to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and we ask all elected officials to support necessary investments in voter registration infrastructure and resources to counter voter suppression and intimidation.

If you'd like to join us in our fight, visit REI's Cooperative Action Network and ask your Senators to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
