I’m a woman who wears a men’s shoe because I need a D width (men’s medium)and finding a woman’s shoe in a D width is challenging. The Apex is a great addition to my standby shoe, the Keen Targhee hiking boot and shoe, which I have been wearing for years after my previous go-to running shoe started not fitting well. My feet have both been surgically reconstructed after tendon ruptures, and, I broke my ankle very badly four years ago, so finding shoes that fit is challenging. The Targhee low has been the only shoe I wear since my injury, and believe me, they have their place in my shoe arsenal. THIS shoe, however, takes the excellent design and fit of the original Targhee to another level. They are lighter and more flexible. The design is lovely. And, for the first time since I broke my ankle, I can walk without limping or needing a cane. Keen has really created a unique shoe for both everyday wear, walking, light hiking, maybe running. I like the addition of the heel lock double eyelet feature a lot. My only quibble is that the laces are extremely short and I had to replace them with a longer lace. I hope the next iteration of this shoe comes with longer laces.
This is a comfortable hiking shoe with a good size toe box (I have had problems with other hiking shoes). I hike nearly daily and my feet feel great. A couple of things to note … on my original wear, I just couldn’t get the shoe to not gap around my ankle making the shoe fell unstable. I bought a longer set of laces to be able to lace this with a runner’s lock, and the problem was fixed. Also, the backs are fairly high, make sure you wear tall enough socks or it will rub your achilles.
I've had Keen hiking boots when I was younger and hiked a lot. Just today I purchased the Keen Targhee Apex and they fit great. Light weight and flexible. I am diabetic and have neuropathy in both feet so a perfect fit with good arch support is crucial. Also REI is a great store and I have been a member for the past 35+ years. the sale rep was wonderful and very patient with me as I tried on five different pairs before choosing the Keen's!
These shoes are great. Lightweight and sturdy. And I love REI, because I accidentally bought a pair that was too large, wore them a little bit before I figured out. They were too big, and the store let me bring them back. I bought another pair but the correct size. The staff was super accommodating.
These are very comfortable with a slightly larger toe box than other brands, but still agile. I hiked for 4 hours in heavy dew the last two days and my feet stay dry. The laces are slightly ribbed and they stayed secure.
I've worn these shoes in several airports and a few long walks & hikes in Minnesota. They are waterproof and nice looking, so I've worn then in morning grass and in board meetings--they seem well-made and are not clunky like the old school Keens I wore for many years. I normally buy New Balance wide shoes but thought I'd return to Keen for a try. These are good shoes for town but I'll go back to New Balance for activity, comfort, and width. Great to see Keen branching out into competition w/ the long distance footwear styles of Astral and others.
I was looking for a lightweight sturdy, and attractive shoe for the springtime, during which I will be doing some hiking/walking in Nebraska. I generally love my Keen's and Merrill's, but they are heavier. This is compounded by the fact that I wear a rocker brace to keep my leg on my foot (years of basketball injuries and no cartilage or tendons remain). So I have to be able to accommodate the brace and use my own orthotics. Now that I have worn these Keen hiking shoes, my feet feel totally rejuvenated, and I am much more capable of long comfortable walks.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am 185 Lbs. 5'11" 73 year old man who hikes 10 to 18 miles a week with elevations from 400 to 1200 feet. I need a wide shoe because I have a large big toe and joint. I've worn these shoes around the house a few days before deciding to keep them. I've only put 12 miles on them so far. The Apex wide has a little extra room in the toe box but I had to go up an extra 1/2 size. They are light weight with a fair amount of cushion. they are simple to lace up because they have fewer eyelets, but this also means they may not snug up on your feet as well. There's no grab loop on the heel to help putting them on. . For me the heel box seemed too big and I had to work with the laces to keep my heel from moving. The jury is still out whether I would buy them again
I had an older pair of leather Keen Austin shoes that were comfortable if a little heavy. I purchased the Targhee Apex shoes to replace them for trail walking and hiking. After trying on my usual size, I elected a half size larger for a just little more room. They are very lightweight and comfortable. I wore them for the first time today on a moderate hike of a well-maintained trail with some rocks and roots here and there. It barely registered that I was breaking in new shoes.
These shoes look and feel great, but more than once I've been surprised how slippery they are on wet concrete. The aggressive tread will probably compensate on wet trails, but I'ld have serious doubts about them on the side of Half Dome in a sudden rain storm. Use caution unless you live in a desert.
