It's time to treat yourself, try something new, or upgrade your gear—whatever you're into, the possibilities are endless.
New arrivalsHow to keep your e-bike running its best, and when to get it serviced.
Read articleBecause e-bikes and conventional bikes are ridden in similar environments, category names for each are also similar: mountain and road, as well as subcategories like recreational, urban, cargo and folding bikes.
Beyond basic bike categories, e-bikes are classified by levels of motor assistance:
Class 1: The motor kicks in only when you pedal, and stops helping at 20 mph. Generally a more affordable option, most new e-bike riders start with a class 1 bike.
Class 2: Has a pedal-assist mode up to 20 mph plus a purely throttle-powered mode.
Class 3: Solely pedal-assist (like class 1), but assistance continues until you hit 28 mph. Popular for commuting and running errands, class 3 bikes are faster and more powerful than class 1 bikes-but pricier. (Some bike paths and trails don't allow class 3 bikes, though.)
A more powerful motor allows you to go faster, haul more stuff and climb better (and burn battery capacity more quickly). Measured in watts, e-bike motors range from about 250 watts up to 500 or more watts.
For a given motor size, a larger battery will offer greater riding range. Measured in watt-hours (Wh), battery capacities can range from 250 Wh up to 500 Wh or more. Stated riding ranges are only rough estimates; higher assist settings, hilly terrain, headwinds and heavy cargo all reduce potential range.
All e-bikes allow you to adjust the level of motor assist - higher settings do more work for you; eco modes help extend battery life.
Battery mount: Batteries integrated into the frame create a clean look and room to add a bottle cage or bike bag. External batteries can be easier to remove for charging. A few bikes have permanently integrated or attached batteries, which makes charging less convenient.
E-bikes have a controller unit with a display to monitor battery life, assist mode, miles ridden, speed and more. More expensive bikes have more sophisticated controllers. A few e-bikes come equipped with extras like a built-in rack, lock or lighting.
