Another well made pannier from Ortlieb

I've had a set of Back Rollers for over 8 years and they are still going strong. They are so great for weekend outings as they can swallow a lot of gear. However they are a bit large for what I typically need when rolling around town with just a laptop, bluetooth speaker and maybe a jacket. The BackRoller Urban bag is not quite as deep or wide which makes it a better fit. I was curious what the difference in size would look like before I bought this bag. Unfortunately I could not really find a picture comparing the two. I'm adding that here.

I've owned a number of Ortlieb bags of different configurations through the years and find them well designed and very well made. Sadly this bag did not work out for me as hoped. It was to replace an older version of the Bike-Shopper Pannier (single). This older single bag was simple with only a single zippered pocket inside of the main compartment. It worked well for me in that it had a well designed handle in which to carry the bag when fully loaded from bike to office, etc. This new bag, though appearing to be well designed, doesn't have a well thought out way to carry the bag when loaded. Sadly the strap system that is also used to close the roll top when attached to one's rack is poorly designed and doesn't work well at all to carry the bag off the bike, especially if one has a significant amount of gear within it. The short of it is this bag would seem to be perfect on the bike for its intended use. It has an excellent attachment system, the tried and trusted QL2.1. It just doesn't transition well at all from on bike to something one can effectively carry. I would recommend that a potential shopper keep this issue in mind when purchasing. Build quality is 5 stars. Carrying strap (hen off bike) is 2 stars (at best).

Plenty of room

Pros= Big and roomy on the inside with 2 inside pockets. One mesh pocket 5” deep & 12” wide with zippered closer. One pocket, 12” by 12” with open top, considered the Lap Top pocket witch sits behind the mesh pocket. When you clip Pannier to the rack, it might be a little loose. I used the provider spacers to get a tight rattle free fit. I adjusted the bottom leaver to my rack, witch makes the hole pannier very solid. I use the mesh pocket for flat repair tools, iPhone, keys, wallet & co2 cartridges. Main compartment fits work shoes, change of clothes, lunch, thermos full of coffee & lock with room to spare. Cons= No rear light clip, No inside side pockets for water bottle/thermos

plastic part breaks after 6 months

It's a good bag, however the plastic is cheap. The bottom bracket broke after six months and Ortlieb tells me it's not covered by the warranty, they'll ship me a replacement part for $4.80 plus shipping. Quality defect and substandard service. Oh well....

Great bag that can hold everything you'll need

The bag is the perfect size for a daily commute and the material feels high quality. It even has a pouch for a laptop and a smaller pouch with a zipper for smaller items. I was able to fit my work laptop, a change of clothes, lunch, and a blender bottle fairly easily. The bag has an opening on the top that folds back and seals everything in so there's no risk of losing anything. I would definitely buy this again!

Plastic pieces break

I’ve had this for about 18 months and use it Monday - Friday. That’s heavy, but normative, use. Just about all of the plastic pieces have broken. It’s in otherwise great shape, but it’s difficult to use without those pieces.

Great Commuter Bag

This bag is my every day commuter, whether it’s to work or a 60 mile day roaming around town. I can carry everything I need, it’s waterproof, accessible and durable. I’ve put 150+ miles a week on this for a year and it still functions like it did day 1.

Great commuter pannier

I've been using this pannier for s few years and it still looks so nice and I get compliments. I bike to the local organic farm and it holds my fruits and veggies nicely. Even when I have a heavy load on one side, I still feel balanced. I plan to get another one so I can carry even more stuff!

Functional and stylish

These bags fit my Nova Saffari 2016 rear rack perfectly. I’ve been able to commute to work with plenty of room to spare (I bought two of these). They have also worked well for trips to the grocery store. As supperficial as this sounds, I think they have a nice look and I have no problem bringing them into my office environment.

Ridiculously easy, wonderfully functional

It is so easy to put on and off the rack that it’s almost unbelievable. Size is great. A padded laptop sleeve would have made it perfect but I was able to use a portable one for mine. Highly recommended.
