For boots: Add one half size to your street shoe size. You should be able to slip one finger behind your heel when you are standing up with the boot unlaced and your toes touching the front. If the boot is too short, your toes will get smashed walking downhill. Too long and your heel will slide up and down and give you blisters.

Lightweight and minimal its not, but when you're mountaineering and alpine climbing this will be your best friend. This is the most popular boot in the climbing club for good reason. This boot is initially intimidating in appearance and expensive, however it won me over after two outings. After one 30 min hike and a second 8 hr day hiking on very mixed wet terrain, my feet were warm, dry, and blister free. The stiff sole is perfect for climbing rock and scrambling over rock and wet terrain. The lace system rocks - it has a lock system so that you can adjust the lower half separate from the upper part of the boot so you can get a more customized fit. The extra tongue padding works well for me for me so left it in. This boot is also compatible with a wider range of crampons then the LaSportiva Trangos (which i've also heard good things about). Also, i love the roomy toe box, but it doesn't feel like i'm swimming in them like the comparable Scarpa's. i'm 5' 2'', 120 lb. normally wear 37/7 but got a 39 after trying on the 38. the 38 size was just a tad too small especially when i tried going down hill. So its true you need to size up a bit. These shoes are also for a narrower fit. Socks: I work one layer of the super thin smartwool hiker socks as the liner and a slightly thicker smart wool ski sock. This combo gives me good protection, while not being too bulky.
I've had these for about 8 months now and absolutely love them. From winter ice climbing (use the warmer tongue insert that comes with them) to summer mountaineering at moderate evelations- this boot rocks. I even wear them on hikes and such in snow because they're so warm, dry, and comfortable. Stiff sole with awesome traction for all terrain. Absolutely recommend this boot.
