Find the closest wilderness area to your home or plan a grand adventure with the National Geographic Wilderness Areas of the United States map. It shows and lists all wilderness areas in the U.S.
- Every Destination Map is printed on durable synthetic paper, making them waterproof, tear-resistant and tough—capable of withstanding the rigors of any kind of travel
- Highlights the more than 800 officially designated areas of wilderness across America
- These areas are managed by 4 different government agencies: the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Bureau of Land Management
- In 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Wilderness Act, designating 54 areas in 13 states as wilderness, giving these lands the highest form of protection
- The Wilderness Act defines these lands as "an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain"
- Since 1964, land designated as wilderness has expanded
- As of 2024, there were 806 areas in 44 states and Puerto Rico that are part of the National Wilderness Preservation System (NWPS)
- This amounts to over 111 million acres of protected land (only 5% of the entire United States)
- Within the contiguous United States, wilderness is mostly concentrated in the West, however these special places can be found in all but 6 states
- Alaska contains almost half of all wilderness areas, with over 56 million acres added in 1980 alone
