I'm in love!
I'm in love with the product! Clearly we all know that Ortlieb makes great products, albeit at a pretty expensive price. What I love about this setup is the simplicity of getting it on and off my bike. I was looking for an alternative to having a bike rack on my bike because I don't always need a rack on it and it's a pain getting in installed and then removed. These bags slide on and off with ease and stay put when they're attached. If you're on the fence about them, don't be. The only thing to consider is that this bag is probably a little bit smaller than you'd expect.
Ortlieb 5.8L panniers on Jamis Renegade C1
I purchased the Ortlieb fork-pack panniers for my new Jamis Renegade C1 gravel bike, for a 4 day hotel tour. The bags worked wonderfully. Easy to mount to my fork mounts. Bags snapped on and off like a dream and a great size that made the bike easy to maneuver. Didn't get to test the water proofness of the bags on this ride, but sure I will in the future. I tried using conventional paniers on a front rack, but was not able to find a front rack that attached to my bike well, so these will be a good replacement. Not as much room as conventional panniers, but don't need to carry that much stuff anyway. Would recommend
Perfect.
I LOVED THESE. Took them on a one-week gravel bikepack trip, and they were perfect. Great way to expand carrying capacity (it was cold. I needed more gear). I tightened the screws every now and then as per the instructions and used locktight. I had zero issues. Bags never fell off nor did the screws ever feel concerning when I did periodically tighten them in spite of several hundred miles of rough roads, potholes, and gravel climbs and descents. I bought a second set for my boyfriend for our next trip. Also Ortleib had great and fast customer service when I needed a small replacement part (missing piece).
Fit for purposed
Panniers work very well. Easy to mount on bike, using the one braze-on on the front fork and the included attachment for the lower mounting point. Waterproof and sturdy, based on using them for a 7-day tour so far.
Great bag for fork use, iffy band mounts
Bought a pair of these for off-trail on a full-suspension bike without fork brake-ons. The packs themselves seem like the typical excellent MIG Ortlieb fit and finish quality. These are surprisingly light. However, I'm not happy with the mounting system for suspension forks without braze ons. Metal bands are used to wrap around the fork tube and must be bent around a screw mount base. The bent ends must be press fit to the screw base with square end pliers so the mounting plate fits flush over top. The bag mount plate screws into the band mounting bases and provides tension against the bands to keep them in place. MAJOR ISSUE: the screws will turn through the clip-on base into the screw mounting base and into the paint and metal of your fork to provide tension against the bands. Given the design there is no protective pads that can be used to prevent the scarring of the forks. This make this a semi-permanent mounting and if removed will show the pair of piercing marks on the fork tubes. Could be a factor for your resale. Points off for this. Not sure why Ortlieb went this route, probably for surety of connection at the expense of fork tube aesthetics. I'm looking at alternative mounting options from ToPeak (didn't even try the Ortlieb method) but not sure if this alternate assembly will handle off-trail usage.
