Danner 2650 GTX
These shoes are excellent, but with one striking flaw. Firstly, these shoes are comfortable and rugged. I work in the field in documentary filmmaking and I’m very rough on all of my shoes and generally on my feet for 10-16 hour days. I require three kinds of shoe. A good solid heavy duty hiking sneaker for light to mildly abusive terrain and weather, a solid hiking boot ( Danner mountain 600) for medium extreme and a heavy boot for the most extreme. I have been able to rely on Danner for all three. I’ve had great experience with this particular hiking Trail 2650 GTX shoe for the lighter day to day side of things. It’s rugged, waterproof, has a great tough exterior. My only complaint is that the sole has decided to start peeling off well before the rest of the shoe has run its course. At a year of this kind of use, I expect a Danner to have plenty of life left in it. While every other aspect of the shoe is still 100%, the sole showing the normal amount of wear with plenty of lug left, I’m a little disappointed that the sole has decided to detach. I’ve corrected this with a once monthly application of some strong rubber adhesive. This mostly does the trick, but still it eventually comes loose. All Danners are super comfy which, in and of itself, definitely earns it 5 stars in every way if not for this one small thing. I’d love to buy another pair of these but this is definitely an issue that I hope Danner addresses. Perhaps I got a pair that the factory used a bad batch of glue on. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. But seriously, fix the glue, Danner.

Even the wides are narrow
As mentioned by others, these run very narrow. Very narrow toebox. I ordered a wide in the hopes they would fit. Nope, even the wide is very narrow when compared to other wide shoes. Construction and features appear really nice though.

Wore out very quickly

Within six months the rubber wore down and the toes have chipped away. I've primarily used these for just walking and a few hikes but they have not aged well at all. The rubber has completely worn away on the bottom of the heel and the treads under the ball of the foot are also gone. And only a few months into wearing them the black paint or whatever is on the top of the toes crumbled off and looked pretty shabby. This is not what I expected from a pair of Danner shoes.

Waterproof...NO

Very comfortable but extremely disappointed that one shoe leaks already after a few months of walking in the rain! For such an expensive shoe that is unacceptable.

Just the best all around winter shoe

This is the absolute best winter shoe I have ever owned ( that includes more expensive brands). This is because 1) waterproof, 2) amazingly comfortable 3) really nice looking and it is a shoe I wear every day - all occasions. I have now also worn it on East hikes in snow, ice, rain, just love them. Well built, vibrant soles and the cushion is amazing. The sizing is tricky: I wear a 12.5 wide in new balance- so I ordered a13 wide. The length is good (slightly bigger) but I would say the width is not as wide... it seems a bit narrow. So take that into account. Either move up in size or get the wide. This is an amazing winter show you all- I just hope it lasts.

Uncomfortable Hiking Shoe?

The way that the tongue and upper laces work makes this shoe very uncomfortable, which is not what you're going for in any shoe but especially a hiking shoe. I'm really surprised that this passed R&D, quality control, or testing.

Do not recommend

I've been a Danner fan for many years. These are my most least liked hiking shoes by them or anyone else. First off, whatever material they made the insole out of is slick. My foot slips side to side like nothing I've experienced before making traversing even a slight slope feel unsure. The soles themselves have ripped away from the midsole in several places. Not like the glue failed, but the midsole has ripped. Again, never seen this before on any hiking shoe I've owned. Lastly the midsoles collapsed early on (less than 30 miles?) and the shoes no longer have any real cushion.

Would not recommend.

Bought Danner GTX 2650 in June 2023. Walked avg 2 hrs per day; five days a week. I consider as normal usage and expected at least a year; hopefully two years from a pair of Danner. However the heel wore thru by November 2023. Heel & midsole disintegrated by end of December 2023. IMO it was a Vibram flaw, then the spongy midsole just wasn't designed to hit the ground and disintegrated quickly. No longer waterproof by January 2024. Six months is not long enough. The uppers are great, the soles failed. REI graciously refunded, but just the same: would not recommend.

I love this shoe. I

I love this shoe. I have plantar fasciitis in my right foot. These shoes provide the perfect amount of stiffness to reduce the amount of flex between the toes to heel. As a result, I have zero foot pain. There is enough cushioning that I have used them for trail running. So far, I have only gone for short 2 and 3 mile hikes and runs with my dog. My trail terrain includes, sand, loose stones, packed dirt and ankle deep weeds. The elevation changes by 100 feet with tight, compact hills. There is never a hint of slippage with the Vibram soles on this trail wet or dry. I absolutely loves this shoe. I normally wear 10.5 wide. That’s the size I got and they fit perfect. I have the Gore-Tex lined shoe. My feet Do not sweat much so I have not experienced the dampness others have complained of. I think the Gore-Tex issue of breath ability is limited to those who simply exhaust moisture from their bodies at a rate which exceeds the performance limits of Gore-Tex. It’s not for everyone. I however, love that these are waterproof. I’m not wading in water but I am in deep weeds and grass at 6 am and the Gore-Tex does its job. I love these shoes! Lastly, they are light. These weigh 14.2 oz each. That’s 2 ounces more than my Hoka Speed Goat 4’s. For a leather shoe, I’d say that’s incredibly light. I love these shoes.
