Kayak Roof Racks
Kayaking is a great way to get out and enjoy a sunny day on the water. But due to their bulky size, transporting kayaks can be quite an endeavor.
A kayak rack lets you carry your boat on the roof of your car, truck or SUV securely via an installed rack or foam blocks. It prevents sliding and bouncing, both of which could damage your kayak's body.
Types of Kayak Racks
There are three types of racks for carrying your kayak:
- Roof-mounted rack system: The basic system comprises four vertical towers and two horizontal bars, held in place by clamps. They're stable and secure but can be complicated to install.
- Factory racks: You can get adapters for your car's factory-installed roof rack that lets you add kayak-carrying attachments.
- Foam blocks: Molded pieces of foam sit between your car's roof and your kayak. Straps then fasten your kayak to the vehicle. These are the cheapest option but less sturdy and durable than an installed system.
Other Considerations:
Rack systems may come with other attachments and accessories to meet your needs.
- J-cradles carry kayaks on their side so you can transport another boat, paddle board or other cargo.
- Saddle mounts cradle the kayak's hull to keep it upright and avoid putting too much stress on one part of the boat.
- Lift systems help you raise your boat onto your car's roof.
