REI Co-op officially opens its new store in Rancho Mirage, California on October 4. The three-day grand opening celebration will include outdoor gear vendors, community partners, afternoon socials and more.
Located at The River shopping center, the new 25,000-square-foot store will offer outdoor enthusiasts in the Coachella Valley a wide assortment of apparel and gear for camping, hiking, biking, climbing, and more. The store will also feature a full-service bike shop staffed by certified mechanics to tune and repair bikes.
Doors will open at 9am on Friday and Saturday and 11am on Sunday. Each day’s festivities will start with morning giveaways (while supplies last) and free coffee from a local vendor. Community members can also purchase a REI Rancho Mirage commemorative mug with a donation to a local nonprofit being announced soon. Numerous local nonprofits and organizations will be on site throughout the weekend sharing about their work in the community.
Each afternoon from 1 – 5pm there will be an outdoor social with outdoor brands, giveaways, music, and community partners. Outdoor brands attending the weekend’s events include Alpine Start, Altra, Arc’teryx, Black Diamond, Brooks Running, Darn Tough, Dometic, Gregory Mountain Project, Kate’s Real Food, KEEN, Nikwax, OOFOS, Osprey, prAna, REI Experiences, Saucony, Sea to Summit, Smartwool, Subaru, Superfeet, and more.
“We are thrilled to be opening an REI in beautiful Rancho Mirage. There are so many amazing recreational opportunities here in the valley and in nearby Joshua Tree National Park. We are excited to provide gear and expert advice to our members and guests,” says Rancho Mirage store manager Jen Parnell. “We have already been warmly welcomed by this community and look forward to building relationships with our customers and the many local non-profits who also believe that the outdoors is for all.”
REI is the country’s largest consumer co-op. Everyone is welcome to shop and learn from REI’s expertise. Co-op members enjoy an even wider range of benefits, including free U.S. standard shipping, member coupons and discounts, a used gear trade-in program, an annual member reward of 10% back on eligible purchases, and more.
The greater Palm Springs area already has over 17,000 co-op members, with more than 5 million co-op members in California. The Rancho Mirage store is REI’s 31st in the state. The closest stores are REI Tustin (102 miles away, opened in 1982) and REI Laguna Hills (110 miles away, opened in 2023).
New members join a growing community that fights for a life outside. With each new membership purchased, the co-op donates $5 to support the REI Cooperative Action Fund. Launched in 2021, the community-supported nonprofit is fueled by donations from REI members, customers, employees, foundations, and corporate partners – including REI Co-op. The REI Fund provides support to nonprofit organizations across the country doing essential work to create a more equitable outdoors for everyone. As part of the grand opening, the REI Cooperative Action Fund in partnership with the REI Rancho Mirage store team will award $10,000 to local nonprofits working to create a more equitable outdoors. Beyond local investments made for the grand opening, REI Co-op has invested $3.7 million in California nonprofits since 2019.
