Two new monuments protect the cultural and ecological significance of public lands in California.

REI Co-op celebrates the designation of Chuckwalla National Monument and the Sáttítla Highlands National Monument.

Located in the Eastern Coachella Valley, Chuckwalla National Monument will preserve precious desert ecosystems, clean water resources, and cultural heritage sites vital to local Indigenous tribes and provide recreation opportunities for nature-deprived communities in the area. Sáttítla Highlands National Monument, located in northern California, will preserve the Medicine Lake Volcano and surrounding area of sacred cultural value to local Indigenous tribes.

Together, these protected lands will increase access to the outdoors, preserve a diverse natural habitat, and help ensure clean water sources for local communities.

We applaud the leadership of the seven Tribal Nations who worked to protect of these culturally significant lands alongside elected officials (including Senator Alex Padilla and Representative Raul Ruiz), local communities, businesses, scientists, and Veterans. We similarly recognize the efforts of President Biden, who has now permanently protected 9 million additional acres of public lands across the country.

For decades, REI has championed the creation and stewardship of public lands that carry critical recreation, ecological, public health and cultural benefits. Since 2023, more than 114,000 REI employees and members acted in support of public lands protections through national monument designations.

With growing recreation demand and mounting pressures on our public lands, we look forward to working with the new Administration and Congress to continue the legacy of protecting America’s lands and waters.
