Located east of Austin and north of Houston, the Sam Houston National Forest is an ideal location to stretch your backpacking legs. Hike under the pine trees of the Lone Star Trail, the longest hiking trail in Texas, and settle in for the night in a primitive camping area before waking up with the sun to hike out in the cool morning air. This is a perfect trip for backpackers to explore a new area of Texas or for those new to backpacking to experience the activity in a fun, safe manner. During this overnight trip we'll explain how to choose and use equipment (including how to load and carry your backpack) to maximize your comfort and fun. You'll also learn about campsite selection, navigation/route finding, camp cooking, water treatment, wildlife precautions and Leave No Trace etiquette. REI provides backpacks, tents, sleeping pads, stoves, all cookware, trekking poles, water filter and food. All you need to bring is a sleeping bag. Guests are welcome to ride with REI from Downtown Austin or meet at the trailhead in Sam Houston National Forest.
