Welcome to the first day of your PNW adventure
Your adventure begins as our guides warmly welcome us at our meeting location near the Portland airport. After introductions and a brief overview of the day, we take off on a scenic drive to the Oregon Coast. Our journey leads us to the Cape Lookout Trail, where we hike through lush old-growth forests brimming with Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and diverse coastal undergrowth. The trail rewards us with stunning panoramas from the cliffs, offering the chance to spot migrating gray whales, sea lions, and seabirds, with the final viewpoint providing a breathtaking view of the ocean 350 feet below. After the hike, we take a short transfer to our ocean-view accommodations at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda, followed by a delicious dinner at a nearby local restaurant. To cap off the day, we can opt to take a casual sunset stroll on the beach. Lunch and dinner included.

After enjoying a nutritious breakfast, we head to Cape Falcon and the Neahkahnie Mountain Trail, where forested paths, more coastal views, and a spectacular craggy summit await. As we hike, our guides share fascinating historical insights, including how the Civilian Conservation Corps played a crucial role in developing many of these trails, improving access to this incredible landscape. We navigate trails that wind through old-growth spruce forests, carpeted with vibrant ferns and wildflowers. Although the trail challenges us with its switchbacks and rugged terrain, the reward is the breathtaking vista from Neahkahnie Mountain's rocky crest, offering sweeping views of Manzanita, Nehalem Bay, and the Oregon coastline stretching all the way to Cape Lookout. As we glide through the waters, we keep an eye out for seals, eagles, and otters, among other wildlife. Explore Cape Horn and the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area
Today’s adventure brings us to stunning Cape Horn on the Washington side of the Gorge, where our guides will delve into its rich history. This area stands as a living tribute to Nancy Russell, whose unwavering passion for conservation left an indelible mark on this regional treasure. Co-founding Friends of the Columbia River Gorge in 1980, Russell played a pivotal role in safeguarding the Gorge from overdevelopment, culminating in the 1986 designation of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. One of her crowning achievements was preventing a planned subdivision at Cape Horn, ensuring its natural beauty would be preserved for generations. As we explore the trails, we’re reminded of Russell’s enduring legacy, which protects this iconic landscape and its rich ecological systems. Tonight, we come together for a celebratory dinner at the River Rock Grill, toasting to the wonderful memories we've created on our journey with our traveling companions and newfound friends.
