Creating space to bike safely in Massachusetts
From 2016-2022, pedestrians and cyclists accounted for 22.4% of all traffic fatalities in Massachusetts—and when 52% of cyclists worldwide worry about being hit by a motor vehicle, helping more people get out and about on bikes and on foot requires they have the space to do so safely. Together, we're partnering with PeopleForBikes to take cooperative action to create these safe cycling spaces—starting with passing the Local Option Gas Tax (H. 2923).
This bill seeks to improve road safety and save lives by allowing cities and towns to charge a three cent per gallon tax on gas and diesel. One cent will be dedicated to the upkeep and creation of new roads, bridges, sidewalks and bikeways; another for the local transportation authority; and the third cent for projects to promote and improve pedestrian and bike facilities, senior transportation and carpooling programs.
Now, we’re harnessing this network's power to urge lawmakers in the House to get this crucial bill across the finish line.
