It’s springtime in 1980, and most tents are A-frame or doghouse-shaped, either cramped or bulky. Into this world arrives the first ever Half Dome from REI. With its rare dome silhouette and lightweight yet sturdy poles, it’s about to usher in a whole new idea of what recreationists can expect from their tents.
The Half Dome proved that a backpacking tent should not only shelter you from the elements but help you enjoy every minute outdoors. REI designers spent the next 45 years making thoughtful updates to ensure the tent only got more comfortable, durable and useful over time. In 2001, the Half Dome 2 arrived, with two doors and two vestibules but without extra weight. The concept was revolutionary at the time, but ask anyone who’s shared a tent recently, and they’ll tell you double doors are a game changer—plenty of cross breeze and no crawling over your bunkmate. Over two more decades, the Half Dome continued evolving with lighter and more durable materials, bolder color options, and clever pocket configurations for adaptable storage.
The outdoor community’s reception has been tremendous. The Half Dome has earned major awards over the years, including a spot in the Backpacker Gear Hall of Fame for products that have stood the test of time. And all along, REI designers have asked members how they use the tent and what could make it even more adventure ready. Member feedback has kept the Half Dome an easy choice for outdoorspeople of all kinds.
“When someone comes into REI, and says, ‘Hey, I want a really good tent to use for all sorts of things, especially backpacking,’” says REI senior design engineer Shon Hancock, “the Half Dome 2 is a no-brainer.”
