An inclusive society, inside and out
Nearly two-thirds of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people in U.S. report experiencing harassment and discrimination in their lives.
In dozens of states, LGBTQ+ individuals--including many of our members, employees, customers, and their families--face an onslaught of laws and measures that threaten their personal safety, the health and wellbeing of their families, and their professional and personal lives.
U.S. civil rights laws protect people from discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, and religion. But they do not protect people from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. We can fix this.
The Equality Act would amend existing civil rights laws to protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service. It passed the House of Representatives last Congress with bipartisan support, but we need the new Congress to introduce and finally pass this essential bill.
